หมู่เกาะสิมิลัน อยู่ในเขตจังหวัดพังงา เป็นหมู่เกาะ 9 เกาะท่ามกลางทะเลลึก ที่วางตัวเรียงรายตามแนวยาวเหนือ-ใต้ มีความสวยงามสุดยอดทั้งเหนือผิวน้ำและใต้ท้องทะเล แนวปะการังของสิมิลันแผ่กระจายอย่างหนาแน่นและมีความหลากหลาย โดยเฉพาะทางทิศตะวันออก มีจุดดำน้ำตื้นและน้ำลึกที่น่าสนใจมากมาย ด้วยเหตุนี้เองหมู่เกาะสิมิลันจึงมีความสำคัญในฐานะเป็นแหล่งดำน้ำลึกที่มี คุณภาพสูงที่สุดของประเทศไทย สิมิลัน ตั้งอยู่ในตำบลเกาะพระทอง อำเภอคุระบุรี ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ 80,000 ไร่ ได้รับการประกาศเป็นเขตอุทยานฯ เมื่อวันที่ 1 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2525
ส่วนที่ ทำการอุทยานฯนั้น จะตั้งอยู่ที่เกาะเมี่ยงเพราะเป็นเกาะที่มีน้ำจืด หมู่เกาะเหล่านี้ได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นหมู่เกาะที่มีความงามทั้งบนบกและใต้ น้ำที่ยังคงความสมบูรณ์ของท้องทะเล สามารถดำน้ำสิมิลันได้ ทั้งน้ำตื้นและน้ำลึก มีปะการังที่มีสีสันสวยงามหลากชนิด ปลาหลากสีสันและหายาก เช่น กระเบนราหู ปลาวาฬ ปลาโลมา ปลาไหลมอเร่ ปลาการ์ตูน
ช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายนถึงเมษายน เป็นช่วงที่น่าท่องเที่ยวดำน้ำสิมิลันมาก ที่สุด ส่วนเดือนพฤษภาคมถึงพฤศจิกายน เป็นฤดูมรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ มีคลื่นลมแรงมาก ซึ่งเป็นอันตรายต่อการเดินเรือ ดังนั้นทางอุทยานฯ จึงประกาศปิดเกาะในเดือนพฤษภาคมเพื่อเป็นการฟื้นฟูธรรมชาติทุกปี
